How to Clean a Disc

CD

Compact discs have been widely used worldwide. Most if not all of the people use this daily; in the office, school or even at home. With its in demand use, they get easily damaged or destroyed. Thus, there is a need for us to handle them carefully and clean them once in a while. After following the steps below, you can now enjoy the movies you want to watch on DVD and dance with unlimited moves on CD.

Before we get started, you have to be reminded that the media disc is very delicate. Proper handling is very important since even the slightest touch might aggravate the condition of your disc. Another principle that has to be kept in mind is to wipe the disc from the center to the edge and not the other way around.

Should you have problems with removing dusts in the disc, get a piece of soft cloth and gently wipe off the particles. To manipulate the CD well, just insert your index finger at the center hole.

If the surface is oily or greasy, do not be frantic. You just have to mix lukewarm water with soap and dip a cotton tipped applicator or maybe even make use of a damp soft cloth, then, rub it gently without applying much pressure. Before you place it back to the jewel case, make sure that that the CD is dry.

If marks from fingers are seen on the disc, apply an isopropyl alcohol or methanol on a soft cloth then rub it gently. Never apply solvents that are oil-based like petroleum jelly and acetone for it might leave a permanent mark on the disc leading to permanent damage.

In case none of the mentioned solutions are available, you may use a few drops of mineral water in cleaning the disc. However, the use of tap water is discouraged since it has a high concentration of salt deposits that may cause tiny scratches on your disc.

Commercial disc cleaners are also available in the market. You can make use of those, but for practical reasons you can just follow the above steps since they are guaranteed to leave your discs really clean.

Finally, if you notice a little scratch on your disc even after cleaning it, you can immediately burn a back up copy. Always keep your CDs or DVDs in a separate jewel case. It is not advisable to have two discs in one case since it can cause unwanted scratches. In an event that you notice that most of your discs are skipping, the problem may not be the discs but could be your player. To resolve this, you may try using a lens cleaner. However, if one disc skips and the others do not, it would be advisable for you to clean that one disc again.
