How to Clean a DJ Equipment

Dj equipment consists of turntable platters, needles, mixers, slipmats etc. These things are usually set aside after use when the owner is very busy and has many appointments to go. Actually, you can do cleaning these things on your own but make sure to do it during non-working days. This is for you to focus and perform the cleaning well without hurrying yourself. You only need few things when cleaning and you can produce it even inside your home.

  • Prepare a cartridge brush, vacuum with brush, smooth clean cloth and isopropyl alcohol.
  • Clean the slipmats first. From its center outwards, use the clean cloth and brush for dusting its dirt out from your slipmats.
  • Remove the slipmats first, damp the cloth with the solution of isopropyl alcohol and water. You may use the vacuum cleaner as well to absorb all dirt not removed by using the cloth.
  • Wipe or brush the turntable platters with the same materials and solution. Do the same cleaning with the slipmats.
  • Be careful in cleaning the cartridges. They are so delicate that you need to be gentle when wiping or brushing. If possible, use a small brush that has smooth edges to avoid damages and to dust away small residues absorbed by these mechanical equipments. Same solution may be use for cleaning the cartridges.

Clean next your crossfader. Before cleaning, unplug your equipments first. You can remove apart the faders and clean it with same procedure.

Take your crossfader apart from each other by the following procedure:

  • Remove all screws that fastened the fader plate from the mixer by using a screwdriver. If you noticed, the fader has a connector attached to it. Remove the connector and also the coverplate of the fader. Include the slider when removing so you will totally take off the cover plate from the fader.
  • Blow out the crevice in the fader by using a can of compressed air. Lubricate the fader with the use of bearing lubricant. This is to remove any scratchy noise or sound leakage when using.
  • Reassemble everything after cleaning by following the steps backward.

Because Dj equipments are quite expensive, taking care of it must be performed regularly. Taking these tips and advice will keep your equipment look good and will run longer. After a gig, a Dj must see to it that he wipes everything since he is playing in an exposed environment. Usually, the audience around are smoking and these smokes will settle on your equipment afterwards. So make sure to wipe it every after gig. Remember that you spent a lot of money just to acquire the best equipment in town. Therefore, if you want to avoid spending such amount again, see to it that you are capable enough of its maintenance. Removing the computer chips and other related equipments during travel will help keep it from losing its parts while in transit.
