How to Clean Barbecue Grates

Barbecue grates can be very dirty after roasting. Having dirty grill can contaminate your food and can be a dangerous health risk.

The things that you will need in cleaning barbecue grill grates are warm water, sponge or wire brush, rubber gloves, liquid dishwashing soap, small container or pot or small basin and hose.

Here are the steps in cleaning a barbecue grill:

  • Let your barbecue grates cool down first so that you won’t get burned.
  • Put on your rubber gloves, scrub off dirt particles using a wire brush.
  • If there are still dirt present, proceed to the soaking method. Get a large container. Make sure it fits your grill grates. Pour warm water into the container and add liquid soap. Stir the soapy solution properly.
  • Place the grill grates inside the container and allow it to soak for 30 minutes.
  • Scrub the entire grill using a sponge to remove debris and soiled foods. You can also use an old brush if the dirt is hard to remove.
  • Use warm water in rinsing the grill grates. Make certain that there is no more cleaning solution left in the barbecue grill. You can also use a garden hose in washing the grates.
  • After making sure that it is totally clean, use a dry cloth and wipe the entire grates. Allow it to dry for several hours under the sun’s heat.

In cleaning barbecue grates, you can either use soaking method or brushing method. Between the two, the soaking method is more ideal as it deeply removes debris. You can also use a cleaning solution intended for cleaning barbecue grill but make sure it is ammonia free as it leaves bad smell in your grill grates. Apply oil before cooking in order to prevent food from sticking the barbecue grates.
