Cleaning barbecue grill grates seems to be a difficult task. But if barbecuing is one of your favorite methods of cooking, then proper maintenance is essential.

The things that you’ll need in cleaning barbecue grill grates are warm water, sponge or wire brush, rubber gloves, liquid dishwashing soap, small container or pot or small basin and hose.

Here are the important instructions:

  • There are two methods used in cleaning grill grates: brushing method and soaking method.
  • Allow the barbecue grill grates to cool down before cleaning.
  • Get your rubber gloves and use your wire brush in scrubbing the grill grates. Pay particular attention to areas containing soiled foods.
  • If it still has debris, proceed to the soaking method. Get a container which is large enough to drown your grill grates. Pour warm water into the container and add liquid soap. Stir the soapy solution properly.
  • Place the grill grates inside the container and allow it to soak for 30 minutes.
  • Get your sponge and scrub the entire grill to further remove any debris. You can also use an old brush in scrubbing the grill.
  • Rinse your grill grates with warm water making sure there is no more cleaning solution left. You can also use a garden hose in washing the grill grates.
  • After making sure that it is totally clean, use a dry cloth and wipe the entire grates. Allow it to dry for several hours. You can expose it under the sun to naturally kill bacteria.

In cleaning barbecue grill grates, you can either use soaking method or brushing method. Between the two, soaking method is more ideal as it deeply removes debris. You can also use a cleaning solution intended for cleaning barbecue grill but make sure it is ammonia free as it leaves bad smell in your grill grates. You can also apply oil before cooking in order to prevent food from sticking to the the grill grates.
