
Proper maintenance with your versatile pan is important in order to last for several years and preserve its seasoning. Cleaning a cast iron skillet is quite simple but proper knowledge on the cleaning process is crucial.
The things that you will need are cast iron skillet, sponge or stiff brush, clean, dry cloth or paper towels, vegetable oil or shortening, kosher salt (optional) and stove.
Here are the instructions in cleaning cast iron skillet:
- After using the skillet, clean it immediately while it’s still hot. Soaking your skillet or leaving it in the sink may cause rust.
- Wash you skillet with hot water. Use a sponge in scrubbing away dirt particles in the surface. Hot water can also remove greasy substances. Rinse the skillet with warm water after scrubbing.
- Pour on moderate amount of Kosher salt and few drops of water to create a paste. Scrub off any stuck food on the surface.
- Rinse your skillet with running water and pour in few cups of water.
- Allow the water to boil for 5 to 10 minutes to remove stubborn dirt.
- Turn off your stove and remove hot water from the skillet.
- Wipe your skillet with a clean dry towel.
- Rub the surface of your skillet with a vegetable oil. You can also coat the outside portion of your skillet.
- Store your skillet in its appropriate place.
Avoid using hard chemicals in cleaning cast iron as it can remove the seasonings of the skillet. Steel wool is also not ideal in removing stuck food. For easy cleaning, always wash the skillet immediately while it’s still hot.
