Your glassware can be cloudy if you have hard water in your house. You may be wondering why hard water makes your glasses look cloudy. Well, this is actually because of the high amount of the mineral content of the water. Hard water contains high level of magnesium, calcium and other minerals and this profusion of minerals stick on and remain on your glasses whenever you wash them in the dishwasher. So, what should you do if your glassware becomes cloudy? Wait, you cannot just throw it out and then buy new glasses. It is very impractical. The best thing you can do is clean your glassware and remove the deposits of mineral from them.
Here are the best methods to follow so you can achieve a clean and clear collection of glassware:
- Toothpaste is an effective cleaner. This is actually one of the best methods to do because the effect can last much longer. Put sufficient amount of toothpaste in a used toothbrush. Rub the glassware with the toothbrush to remove the mineral deposits entirely. After you have completely scrub the glasses, rinse it and then wash again using a detergent soap.
- Mix baking soda and water to create a paste. Dab some amount of the paste to a brush and gently scrub it to the cloudy glass and make sure that you completely remove the mineral deposits. Afterwards, wash the glassware using detergent soap.
- Boil water in a pan. Remove the pan from the stove and then put your cloudy glassware into it. Let your glassware stay there for several minutes. After that, get the glasses, wash it using mild detergent soap, and then rinse thoroughly. If you still see the cloudy appearance, soak a sponge with vinegar and then scrub the glasses gently to remove further the mineral deposits adhered on the glass. One option so you can thoroughly remove the mineral deposit is to let the glasses soak with the vinegar solution first before rinsing it with soap and water.
- You will need a pot or a huge container and enough amount of hot water for this cleaning technique. Pour hot water on the container and then add little amount of ammonia. Place your glassware into the hot water and ammonia solution. Leave your glasses into the solution for several minutes, thirty minutes at the maximum. This will soften and remove the mineral deposits on your glassware. After soaking it, rinse it with water and detergent soap and make sure that you get rid of the ammonia substance on your glasses.
Having cloudy glasses can really be a huge household problem. Even if you always clean them, chances are they may come back from time to time whenever you wash them with hard water. However, keeping them always in a clean and clear condition is necessary because you would not know when a visitor would come and when they did, you could not offer them a glass of wine or something because all your wineglasses are cloudy and you have not cleaned them yet.
