How to Clean a CPAP Humidifier

CPAP is an important sleep deprivation therapy. With this, CPAP humidifier is essential. It helps prevent dryness in your airway passages. It also relieves any discomfort and even nasal congestion. Upon using CPAP therapy, one important task is to maintain a clean and clear CPAP humidifier. Presence of dirt particles or development of molds can make your condition worse. Cleaning your CPAP humidifier requires a simple cleaning process and with cleaning solution that are just obtained at home. You have to go through various cleaning solution that are expensive and hard, using mild soap and water will do.

The things that you will need in cleaning CPAP humidifier are baby bottle brush, liquid soap, bowl, hot water.

Here are the instructions in keeping your humidifier clean:

• Gather the needed cleaning materials. Put your rubber gloves on but this is optional.
• You need to avail a baby bottle brush. This can give you a thorough access in proper cleaning of your CPAP humidifier. With this, you can reach the bottom part and it will be more convenient to brush edges and deep holes.
• Detach the CPAP humidifier. Get your bowl and make a mild cleaning solution. Fill in hot water into the bowl and add you liquid soap. Stir the solution properly.
• Place the cleaning solution inside your humidifier and shake. Be careful not to burn your hands.
• Allow the cleaning solution to soak for several minutes. This helps loosen debris or dirt particles present in the humidifier.
• After soaking the solution, get your baby bottle brush and start scrubbing your humidifier. Scrub the hole and reach the deep areas. Make sure to properly remove dirt particles. Also, do not forget to scrub the outer part of the humidifier. You can also use a sponge in scrubbing the outer portion.
• After a thorough scrubbing, rinse the CPAP humidifier with hot water. Remove any cleaning solution. Try to smell the humidifier if the soapy solution is totally removed.
• Wipe your humidifier with a dry towel or dry cotton cloth and allow it to air dry.
• Once the humidifier has dried, connect it back to your CPAP piece.

It is beneficial to use mild cleaning solution in keeping your CPAP humidifier clean. Using ammonia content solution can leave hard smell to your humidifier wall and can be a very dangerous health risk. Avoid using hard chemicals in cleaning CPAP humidifier. Make sure to detach the humidifier when cleaning it. To prevent mineral deposits into your CPAP humidifier, it is best to use distilled water.
