How to Clean Cushions

Cleaning a cushion may take only few minutes of your time if they are made of washable materials like fabric. We usually wash cushions every quarter of the year to avoid dirt and dust. This is because we do not want them to look overused and faded, leaving its shape on the same place without shrinking. There are many ways to clean cushions safely.

  • For patio cushions – mix a tablespoon of fabric detergent, a cup of lukewarm water, and a teaspoon of borax powder. Stir the mixture well and put in a clean spray bottle. Spray it to your cushions especially on its corner and sidings. Leave it for about half an hour. Spray it with water by using a hose nozzle and make sure to set the fastest level so you will surely remove all the mixture that you spray. Let it dry outside with not too much heat of the sun.
  • For outside patio cushions – cushions that are placed outside the house or building usually gets all the dirt, dust and even mold around it. Therefore, we need to clean them regularly to avoid it from smelling bad and will still look like a brand new one. If the outside cushions are detachable, simply remove it from the frame of your furniture. Place it on an area where you can clean them properly. Brush it first with dry brush that has nylon strands. A mixture of baby soap, warm water and white vinegar is perfect for cleaning this type of cushion. Use a sponge in cleaning the cushion by rubbing it after you dip the sponge into the mixture. Rinse the outside cushions properly. Make sure that there is no excess mixtures left. Let it dry outside with cool air and slight heat of the sun.
  • For cloth patio cushions – wipe your patio with a sponge that is dipped into a mixture of mild soap or dish washing detergent with warm water. Keep doing this until you wipe all sides and corners of the cushions. Spray with a stain remover that is used for laundry stains and leave it for few minutes. Scrub it also with nylon brush and rinse it thoroughly. Place it outside under enough heat of the sun.

If your cushions are made of another material other than fabric, you may still try these steps but just make sure you will not damage or shrink its shape. Always remember that in cleaning a cushion, you must be extra careful that you clean it properly. Cushions have different shapes and materials and are quite hard to clean. Owners must take enough time to have it washed properly and maintain its great looking feature. If you do not want to clean it yourself or does not have enough time to do it, always ask others help. You may hire somebody to clean it properly. Other laundry shops also offer cleaning different types of cushions. Therefore, your last option would be hiring somebody from the laundry shop (or a laundry expert) to do the correct and proper cleaning of your cushions. However, it still advisable if you do the cleaning yourself so that you will make sure your cushions will not be damaged. It is better to keep your cushions safe always.
