How to Clean Cymbals

Cleaning cymbals won’t damage your instrument as it only removes tiny dirt particles. The element that is removed upon proper cleaning is dirty and oxidized. However, most people don’t take cleaning cymbal a necessity. But if you want your cymbal to appear shiny and extend its life, then it is beneficial to know the cleaning process.

The things that you will need are large bucket (large enough for soaking cymbals), liquid soap, commercial cymbal cleaner, cymbal polisher, 2 cotton cloth and water.

Here are the steps in cleaning cymbals:

  • Detach cymbals from its stand and remove straps.
  • Get a large bucket and mix in water and mild liquid soap. Stir the solutions properly.
  • Wash the cymbals in a tap water using mild soap and rinse.
  • Place the cymbals inside the large bucket with your soapy solution. Let it soak for 10 to 15 minutes.
  • Get the cymbals and rinse with tap water.
  • Scrub your piece using a soft cloth moisten with your purchased commercial cleaning solution for cymbals.
  • Scrub one area at a time making certain to remove debris and dirt particles.
  • After thorough scrubbing, wash the cymbals with running water. Remove any residue or cleaning solution.
  • Wipe the cymbals with a dry cotton cloth. You can also apply cymbal polisher if you have.
  • Allow the cymbals to completely dry for several minutes.
  • Place back the cymbal to its stand and tie straps accordingly.

Avoid using a wire brush in cleaning cymbals as this can scratch your piece. Use a nylon brush for stubborn dirt with soaking method. Furthermore, wipe your cymbals with a clean cotton cloth after using. This makes your cleaning task easier. You can apply the above procedures once a month to maintain a shiny and clean appearance of your cymbals. Avoid using strong chemicals as this can permanently damage your piece.
