How to Clean Cymbals with Household Items

Owning cymbals don’t require expensive maintenance as there are effective and inexpensive household items that can be used in cleaning your piece. With ordinary household item, you can achieve a shiny and clean drum kit in less time.

The things that you need in cleaning cymbals are clean soft cloth, rubber gloves (if necessary), rubber mat or old newspaper, lemon, old clean towel, vinegar and water. Here are the important instructions:

  • Remove the cymbals from its stand.
  • Place a rubber mat on the area where you would like to do the cleaning process. This will protect the ground from stains or debris.
  • Put on your rubber gloves. (if desired)
  • Wash the cymbals with clean tap water and mild soap. Rinse it properly and set aside.
  • Slice the lemon into half then squeeze out the juice into the cymbal. Scrub the cymbal using the sliced lemon. Repeat scrubbing using halved lemon on the other portion of the cymbal. You can also use a scouring pad in scrubbing cymbal but be careful not to remove any logos on the surface.
  • Get a bowl and pour in half cup of white vinegar. Dip your cotton cloth into the vinegar and carefully scrub the cymbals again. Remove any debris and dirt particles.
  • After making sure that the cymbals are clean, wash the cymbals with warm water.
  • Wipe your piece with a dry clean towel. Allow it to dry for several minutes.
  • You can also use a cymbal polisher after cleaning your instrument with your household item.
  • Place back the cymbal to its strap and fasten to its drum kit.

If you own copper cymbals, make certain to use cymbal polisher to prevent discoloration and oxidation. Use a mild cleaning solution first before proceeding to commercial cleaning products.
