How to Clean a DVD

DVDs can be very useful nowadays. It is used not only in storing music and video files, but also important data. Dirty DVDs can cause skipping of music and video files. Thus, proper cleaning is important in order to prevent disk reading errors.

The things that you will need are 2 lint free cloths, isopropyl alcohol, tap water, small glass or cup for your cleaning solution and a glass cleaner.

Here are the easy steps in cleaning DVD:

  • Hold your DVD in an upright position by placing your finger at the middle hole and the thumb supporting the edge of the DVD.
  • Get a small cup and pour in equal amounts of alcohol and tap water. Stir the mixture properly. Alcohol works best in cleaning DVD as it easily evaporates into the air.
  • Use a lint free cloth and dip it into your alcohol and water solution. A lint free cloth is more ideal in wiping DVD as it easily traps dust particles.
  • Gently wipe your DVD starting from the middle surface going to the edges. Circular motion is not ideal in cleaning DVD as it can scratch around the surface of your DVD.
  • Allow the solution to air dry for several minutes.
  • After it has dried, spray a glass cleaner into the surface of DVD. A glass cleaner helps remove stubborn dirt particles that are not removed with alcohol solution.
  • Wipe your DVD with a dry lint free cloth and leave it for several minutes to dry completely.
  • Place it back inside your CD case and store in an appropriate place.

Avoid holding the surface of your DVD as it can scratch and produce smudges in the area. You can also use toothpaste in minimizing scratch marks in the surface. Hot water is also not ideal in cleaning DVDs. Never use hard cleaning agent as this can be hard to remove and can damage your DVDs.
